This chapter takes stock of the relationship between journalism and disinformation by tracing pressure points in the journalism industry, survival strategies that have emerged within journalism, how alternative news organizations, new formats, forms, and mechanisms of authenticity and expertise present challenges, as well as under what circumstances journalism can play a role in the spread of disinformation. Taking CNN’s decision to not fact-check its live broadcast of the June 2024 presidential debate between Donald J. Trump and then-candidate Joseph R. Biden as an example, the chapter discusses how the objectivity norm is sometimes invoked in a manner that prices objectivity over truth, as well as the role of false balance. Upon tracing some of the normative commitments of journalism and systemic issues that affect the industry, the chapter provides conceptual insights into disinformation and fake news and argues that disinformation must be understood through the prisms of politics, identity, and power.
