TikTok has a political influencer problem targeted at Gen Z voters

Abstract

Government officials across the United States continue to panic about TikTok. Fears about whether the Chinese-owned social media platform collects U.S. citizen data for the Chinese government have led to a recent statewide ban in Montana and rare bipartisan action at the federal level. But direct manipulation of the app’s vast user base is more likely to be impactful in the near term. Groups in the U.S. are already using new strategies to manipulate public opinion in the lead-up to the 2024 presidential election.
